Lessons on Grief, Six Months Later

1
1

Today marks 6 months since Helene hit Appalachia. Today the air here is thick with smoke from wildfires kindled by downed trees from the hurricane. Today I am sitting with this poem which came to me after Helene, and feeling it all.

The experience of an entire region collectively grieving, homes destroyed including my own, businesses wrecked, lives taken, sacred forests unrecognizable, was nothing short of a wake up call. The ignited passion to care for people and planet that I felt in the weeks following Helene still burns strong and I know I’m not the only one. Nothing can prepare you for grief like this, and nothing can prepare you for the way grief breaks you open and makes you want to live more, love more, and participate as fully as possible in the collective human story. 🤍
